Like Sharpeville sixteen years before, there were no warning shots. No order for the crowd to disperse. "We fired into them. It's no use firing over their heads," one policeman said.

Hector Peterson, thirteen, was the first to die. He was hit from behind and then carried into a journalist's car and rushed to a clinic. But it was too late.

The police threw tear gas canisters into the crowd, but the angry people continued forward anyway. There were dead and wounded children and teenagers already on the ground—blood soaking their clothes. Some were picked up by fellow students. Other students, in a rage, were pelting police with bricks and bottles.

The demonstrators were frightened as bullets flew through the air and more students fell. But the crowd kept coming. They chanted slogans as they continued to move toward the police. Some were screaming hysterically, outraged at the violence surrounding them. Others courageously ignored the danger. They were enveloped by dust from the unpaved streets, and chaos was everywhere.

Young blacks from the townships had had enough of nonviolent responses to government brutality. Many were inspired by the idea of black pride and were more militant than their parents. It was time the government of South Africa heard a different black voice. One that was not committed to peaceful and patient progress. A voice fueled by years of repressed anger. Unlike many of their parents, they were not afraid of the police. Violence was the only way. The freedom, the rights, and the power they wanted
